About the role
CitySwift is looking for a Data Engineer to join our rapidly growing team.
CitySwift is the world’s leading performance optimisation platform for public transport, enabling data-driven decision-making for some of the largest transport networks globally. Backed by over €15 million in venture capital funding, we partner with major public transport operators and government authorities, including Go-Ahead Group, Transport for London, and many more. CitySwift is experiencing accelerated growth, with 117% year-over-year revenue growth in 2025.
Our mission is to increase the adoption of sustainable public transport worldwide. Today, our platform optimises more than 3 billion passenger journeys annually, and our target is to reach 10 billion journeys by the end of 2026.
At CitySwift, you’ll have the opportunity to take ownership, make a measurable impact, and grow professionally as part of a collaborative, mission-driven team. Join us in shaping the future of public transport by driving the next phase of CitySwift’s growth.
About the Role
As a Data Engineer on the Engine team, you will play a pivotal role in building and evolving CitySwift’s core data processing engine. You will work within a team responsible for ingesting, cleaning, and joining high-velocity transport data, processing over 20 million vehicle pings daily and matching demand to telemetry every 22 seconds. Your work will directly power our automated pipelines, data validation algorithms, and geospatial mapping tools, ensuring high data integrity across billions of passenger journeys.
Key responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines that ingest and process multi-source transport datasets (vehicle telemetry, schedule data, passenger ticketing/APC demand, and geospatial topology).
- Develop and refine automated data cleaning, validation, and deduplication logic to maintain high data integrity across raw, noisy datasets.
- Optimise core data processing pipelines for geospatial mapping, corridor-level analysis, and real-time/batch data enrichment.
- Support pipeline management, job monitoring, automated testing, and error handling to guarantee reliable daily processing for downstream products (Explore, Evolve, Discover).
- Collaborate closely with data scientists, software engineers, and product teams to translate domain algorithms and complex transportation logic into efficient engine code.
- Troubleshoot complex data processing issues, assist in root-cause analysis, and streamline data ingestion pipelines.
- Continuously learn and adopt new technologies, distributed tools, and data engineering best practices as our platform scales.
Desired Qualifications
- 3+ years of professional experience in data engineering or a closely related field.
- Experience designing, developing, or maintaining data pipelines, ETL/ELT processes, or data-driven systems.
- Solid understanding of data modeling, data warehousing concepts, and data quality principles.
