About the role
At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what’s next.
Job Overview We are looking for a Software Engineer in Test who is passionate about quality and test automation to join the TV & Web Player Developer Experience and Release Quality team. We own end-to-end testing, build systems, CI/CD, and the infrastructure and tooling behind them, so that player engineers have fast, reliable developer workflows and the clients that power Netflix playback in web browsers and on a huge range of TV and streaming devices ship quickly and with high quality.
This role focuses on test automation, covering both feature and performance testing. You will develop the test strategy, automated tests for new player features as they are built, from core streaming to live events and ad-supported viewing; you will maintain our current automated test suites; you will make sure our players perform well across the wide variety of devices our members use; and you will lead innovation in how test automation gets developed in the first place, so that coverage keeps pace with a fast release cadence and the team trusts the results enough to block a merge or a release on them.
About the Role Partner with player engineers early in feature development to own the end-to-end and functional test strategy for new features: which member scenarios need coverage, which tests should gate a merge or release, and what test streams, data, and upstream support those scenarios depend on. Own performance testing: build automated performance tests and benchmarks (such as playback startup time, rebuffering, memory, CPU, and frame rate) across a representative range of TV devices, catch regressions before they ship, and help engineers find and fix their root causes. Innovate on how test automation is developed: build frameworks, harnesses, and reusable tooling, and apply AI-assisted approaches that make tests faster to write, easier to maintain, and more trustworthy. Engage with Netflix's test and developer tools teams to bring the latest capabilities into our workflows, and influence their roadmaps toward enhancements that support our testing needs. Build the tools that make realistic end-to-end test scenarios possible, such as utilities to manipulate test streams and services that provide reliable, repeatable test data, and partner with upstream teams to get the hooks and support those scenarios need. Own and improve test metrics (critical scenario coverage, escaped defects, flake rate, and performance baselines), and use them to drive priorities. Drive down flaky tests and known issues, reduce runtime, and retire tests that no longer change a decision. Work closely with teammates who own the build system and CI/CD pipelines so automated tests are integrated as reliable, well-understood quality gates. Support release readiness and live event readiness, clearly communicating quality, performance, and reliability risks and their impact to engineering, product, and release stakeholders, including participating in on-call rotations for player client releases. Validate playback quality and client stability through A/B test variant monitoring and metrics analysis prior to driving full production rollouts. Exemplify the Netflix culture by understanding, advocating, and demonstrating its values and you make sure every voice on the team is heard.
