About the role
Via is on a mission to create public transportation systems that provide far greater access to jobs, healthcare, and education. Our platform serves as the technology backbone for modern transit networks, transforming antiquated and siloed public transportation systems into smart, data-driven, and efficient digital networks. With hundreds of agency partners around the world, Via is recognized as the leading transportation technology and service provider globally.
As a Senior Android Engineer at Via, you'll be a core member of the rider mobile team, owning the Android experience that millions of riders depend on every day — from booking rides and managing accounts to the underlying mobile infrastructure that makes it all work seamlessly. You'll work on a product that has real, tangible impact on how people move through their cities, collaborating closely with designers, backend engineers, and product managers who care deeply about the quality of what they ship. If you're an Android engineer who takes pride in building polished, high-performance mobile experiences and wants to see your work used at real scale, this is the role for you.
**This is a hybrid position with the expectation that you will be onsite in NYC 2-3 days a week.**
About the Role:
- Collaborate closely with designers, backend engineers, and product managers in order to deliver our high-quality, user-friendly rider application
- Own the development and continuous improvement of Via's rider Android app - building new features across booking, account management, and the core rider journey while keeping the experience fast, reliable, and intuitive
- Architect and evolve the mobile infrastructure services that power Via's apps, making thoughtful decisions about app architecture patterns, performance optimization, and memory management that the whole team benefits from
- Diagnose and resolve critical production issues under pressure, minimising disruption to riders and acting as a key line of defence when things go wrong in live environments
- Mentor and guide engineers on the team - sharing your expertise in Android development, reviewing code thoughtfully, and helping others grow
About You:
- 5+ years of hands-on Android development experience, with deep proficiency in Kotlin and strong knowledge of the Android application lifecycle - activities, fragments, view models, and services
- Strong grasp of Android app architecture patterns, Jetpack Compose, and RESTful APIs. Expertise in performance optimization, memory management, and debugging complex issues.
- Knowledge of concurrent programming using Kotlin Coroutines or RxJava
- Experienced with Android frameworks including Location Services and Google Maps API, and familiar with third-party mapping tools such as Mapbox
- A natural collaborator and mentor - you take ownership of your work, share knowledge generously, and make the engineers around you better
